Know Your Rights! Ask for an Interpreter!

An important message from pediatricians at New York Hospital Queens. Know Your rights! Ask for an Interpreter if you need one at a hospital.

If English is not your first language, if you don’t understand why you are being admitted or how you are being treated, if you can’t tell your doctor where you are hurting — ask for an interpreter. We are physicians at New York City hospitals caring for people who speak dozens of different languages. Interpreters help us accurately diagnose and treat these patients, and they also help ensure that our patients understand and participate in their own care. Hospitals and clinics can be busy, however, and we may not always remember to ask you if you need translation. In one of our hospitals, we found that 60% of patients were not offered an interpreter, and 50% did not know they had the right to one.

Interpreters mean better care and healthier patients. Know your rights and ask for one next time you or a loved one are sick.

當你到診所或醫院見醫生時, 你有權利提出需要語言翻譯。 這是病人或病人家長的權利。

Thank You for Turning Out for Our Halloween Party!

The Parents’ Association of P.S. 139 held its First Annual Halloween Party at P.S. 139Q on Saturday, October 27, 2012. This event is to help raise the funds needed for the art programs (e.g., Bhangra dance, African drumming and Circus Arts) for our kindergarten through second grade classes. We are trying to raise over $18,000 so these grades can participate in the arts this year.

Thank you for helping to make this event such a success!
